As expected, the antivirus scans files on access, on demand, and on schedule and has the ability to quarantine threats. That's certainly better than Panda Antivirus the company's standalone anti-virus, which can only delete threats, can't schedule scans, and doesn't include TruPrevent.
The suite's AV has the unusual ability to send an e-mail or network warning message when a threat is found. West Coast Labs certifies the product for detection and removal of viruses as well as detection of Trojan horses and spyware; ICSA Labs certifies it for detection but hasn't finished testing it for removal certification.
A full scan of my standard clean test system took about 15 minutes. Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor run a full scan in about 7 minutes on the same system; others can take 30 or more. I installed the suite on eight disgustingly malware-infested systems to see how well it would clean them up. Where Panda Antivirus had consistently crashed trying to clean up one test system, the suite had no such trouble.
According to Panda, that's because my earlier problems helped the company find and fix a problem in its signature files. This has also helped fix the problem in the standalone AV, it says. TruPrevent came into play just once during removal testing, to whack a DLL that the standalone flagged as suspicious; neither one fully removed the darned thing.
Out of 16 spyware samples, the suite removed ten, tried but failed to remove four, and didn't see two of them at all, the same as with the standalone AV. Of eight commercial keyloggers, it removed just two, failed to remove three, and missed the other three.
That's a mediocre overall performance but a fraction better than the standalone, which totally missed one of the keyloggers that this version saw but failed to remove. In a couple cases, the suite reported that it had found and removed a threat, then reported the same thing again and again.
Clearly, it didn't remove that one! TruPrevent flexed its muscles a bit more when I tested its ability to block malware installation on a clean system. Of eight keyloggers, it blocked three, missed three, and tried but failed to block the other two from installing, just the same as did the standalone AV. But thanks to TruPrevent, in the spyware tests the suite successfully blocked a threat that the standalone couldn't—and partially blocked two that the standalone didn't see at all.
In the end, it blocked 13 of the spyware samples, missed one, and failed to remove two. It killed off about a third of the installers on sight, which is better than blocking them when they launch or during installation.
Next: New-Style Firewall. Panda's firewall completely handles the basic task of keeping rabid hackers out of your system. My port-scan tests showed that it correctly stealthed all ports, making them invisible from the outside. It even reported the tests as port-scan attacks.
The firewall also watches for intruders on your wireless network and lets you decide who's allowed in. It also reports vulnerabilities such as missing security patches, which can be important if for some reason your Automatic Updates can't load all patches. Panda's program control is more like that of NIS than of the typical querulous, pop-up—spewing firewall. NIS lets known good programs to access the Internet, blocks known bad programs, and blocks unknowns only if it detects malicious behavior.

If something's not quite right, the corresponding status areas gets red highlights. Panda Internet Security Malware Neutralized. Panda Internet Security Statistics Report. The colorful statistics report lets you know just what the suite has done to protect you lately. Even if a particular threat isn't recognized, TruPrevent can recognize and block it based on behavior.
If you don't feel protected without a storm of confirmation pop-ups, you can always config-ure Panda to ask the first time it sees a new program—but who would want to? My usual leak-test programs for advanced program control don't work for a firewall like Norton's or Panda's. Sure, these programs demonstrate techniques found in malicious programs, but since they're not malicious themselves, the firewall lets them do whatever they want. To test Panda's firewall, I turned off the protection against known threats and tried to launch six malware samples that try to sneak past regular program control, just as I did for NIS Results varied wildly.
The firewall blocked one from acting as a server, and TruPrevent blocked another as dangerous. For another sample, TruPrevent displayed the same warning over and over every few seconds, even though I repeatedly clicked "Always deny. And it seemed to ignore the other two samples, allowing one to flood the screen with adware-style browser windows.
I like the idea of letting the firewall make decisions about which programs can access the Internet, but I feel more confident about Norton's implementation than Panda's. The firewall is a tough bugger; I attacked it as malware might, and it resisted mightily. I couldn't disable it by setting it to OFF in the Registry and then crashing the system.
Though I managed to turn off some of its Services, the firewall protection wasn't affected. And I couldn't stop it by killing processes in Task Manager. I did manage to fool it with mouse clicks, but a malicious program would have to be impossibly clever to do that pro-grammatically. Next: Simple Spam Protection. Panda's simple spam protection module filters the incoming POP3 e-mail stream and marks messages it deems to be spam by sticking [SPAM] in the subject. It integrates with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, automatically diverting marked messages into a SPAM folder; those using other e-mail clients will have to create a message rule to do this.
There's no configuration required or even possible other than populating the list of trusted addresses. Senders on your trusted list will never be blocked, but there's no provision to import your address book automatically, as McAfee, CA, and Norton will do.
You'll have to work on building the list yourself, which is a pain if you've got a sizable address book. You can choose to have Panda automatically add the address of any message that you mark as "Not Spam. I let the spam filter process about 1, messages from a real-world e-mail account. Strangely, I found that Panda kept sucking in mail and passing it to Outlook even when I canceled the download.
Panda explained this is because of its WebProxy process handling the transfer. That took roughly three times as long as downloading the same batch of messages without filtering, but this may not be noticeable when you're just getting one day's worth of mail.
One thing impressed me—every single message flagged as spam was clearly and undeniably spam. Not a single valid message was misfiled, nor did Panda block such things as newsletters that may or may not have been requested. It did allow about 20 percent of the spam into the Inbox, but that's about the same as McAfee's antispam and significantly better than Norton's. Next: Rudimentary Parental and Privacy Control.
